This coming Saturday July 17th at sundown begins Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of Av. It is a day of fasting that concludes at nightfall on Sunday the 18th, in commemoration of the destruction of the First and second Temples in Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. and 70 C.E. (Click this link to learn more).
This past Sunday we held the first lecture in our BJC lecture series. Speaker, Dr. Johanna Frances Newman delivered a wonderful snapshot of the lives of Jewish immigrants who migrated to the Caribbean from 1933-1945. The talk was well attended by people who had Caribbean roots from all over the world including Canada, England and America and showed us how deep our connections are through our Jewish heritage. Our sincere thanks go out to Dr. Newman who generously gave of her time to speak with us and to Amalia and Avi Levi who helped organize our presenters. If you were unable to attend the lecture, please use the iCloud link below to view the presentation.
Our next speaker will be Simon Kreindler on July 27th at 6:00pm. Simon is author of “Peddlers All, Stories of the first Ashkenazi Jewish Settlers in Barbados”. We hope that you will join us for his exciting presentation.
I am also including this link https://pasyn.org/program/reading-jewish-lives for Jewish Lives which is a prize-winning biography series dedicated to illuminating the range and depth of the Jewish experience from antiquity to the present. The Jewish Lives Series is published by Yale University Press and the Leon D. Black Foundation.
