Barbados Jewish Community

President’s Message – July 24, 2020

Shabbat Shalom!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Scott Oran (my best friend and husband) received an email from the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming his appointment as Israel’s Honorary Consul to Barbados. I know that he will do his very best to make the community proud. Please join me in wishing him a warm Mazel Tov!

I also wanted to send to you a link to an article that I received from a member of our community that I thought you might find interesting about Black cantors and their influence in Harlem synagogues “Congregation Beth B’nai Abraham was founded by the Barbados – born Rabbi Arnold Josiah Ford (pictured with string bass)”.  Rabbi Arnold Josiah Ford (23 April 1877 – 16 September 1935) was a Barbadian American black rabbi, and a prominent member of Harlem‘s Black Jews community.

We will be continuing our Zoom Friday night services from 6:30 pm tomorrow, July 24th (code 95083597091).  Our guest Baal Tefillah Charles Maurice and his daughter Sarina from Temple Sinai of Hollywood, Florida will lead this week’s service.  Scott and Gilda have yahrtzeit for their mother, Anita, this Friday.  We hope to see you on Friday!

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Shabbat Shalom!

Sharon Oran
