President’s Message – July 9

Word of the week:

Dear all,

In the aftermath of hurricane Elsa, many Barbadians have had a challenging week of clean-up.  People have been without power for days.  Some have lost homes, roofs, trees have fallen, and businesses have once again been affected.  Yet there is much to be grateful for as communities have come together to assist one another and provide much needed updates and help.  Communities can be classified by the purpose that brings them together.  In Judaism, community (kehilla) is an integrative part of the Jewish experience.  “It is no accident that the Jewish people call themselves Am Yisrael– ‘the people of Israel’-rather than Da’at Yisrael, or ‘the religion of Israel.’ A sense of peoplehood has long been the defining characteristic of the Jews.” (https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/community-focused/) In these times of COVID, ash from volcanoes, hurricanes and economic challenges, communities become even more essential to our personal and social wellness.

The BJC is fortunate to have a generous team who have worked hard to create opportunities for community interaction, education, and religious continuity, but your participation is needed to build a stronger bond.

Please join us this SundayJuly 11, 10 AM Eastern Time for Dr. Joanna Frances Newman’s presentation on her book,  Nearly the New World: The British West Indies and the Flight from Nazism, 1933-1945.
