President’s Message – October 29

Word of the week:

Dear all,

One of the biggest topics in the news, besides COVID, is the environment and the devastation climate change poses for future generations. The UN will be holding a summit in Glasgow this Sunday. “Countries are being asked to come forward with ambitious 2030 emissions reductions targets that align with reaching net zero by the middle of the century. Countries can achieve this by accelerating the phase-out of coal, curtailing deforestation, speeding up the switch to electric vehicles and encouraging investment in renewables.

Genesis 2:15 states: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

The Tanakh makes it clear that, as the whole Earth belongs to God, humans have to respect it and hand it back to God unspoiled. The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all  who live in it. Psalm 24:1”

As part of our mitzvah day, we will be holding a service dedicated to the environment. We also encourage you to play your part in the 6R’s listed below. We must all do our part!

Refuse to buy or accept products that can harm you, your family and the environment.
Example: Use environmentally friendly cleaners without toxins.

Reduce your daily consumption of energy, fuel, paper, water and of course plastics.
Example:Use recycled bags or simply refuse plastic bags.

Reuse and repair items so that you can extend the life of the goods and products you purchase.|
Example: Repair the soles and heels of old pairs of shoes.

Repurpose old or otherwise useless products into something new and practical.
Example: Use old palettes to grow a garden at home or make furniture.

Regenerate and rebuild something to make it better and more sustainable.
Example: Add organic manure or nitrogen to depleted patches of soil around your home to restore it. Composte all your house wastes.

Recycle all the basics like paper, plastic, metal and glass.
Example: Take your used plastic bottles to B’s recycling or organize a community collection.
